Sharing food, strengthening communities

Overview

This app creates a community-driven, donation-based marketplace where individuals can list surplus produce from their gardens or excess food from farmer stands—ensuring that fresh, nutritious food reaches those who need it most.

In 2023, 18 million people experienced food insecurity in the U.S. source

Food insecurity is defined as the lack of consistent, reliable access to nutritious food.
 

Contributing factors include financial hardship, inadequate social support, and structural inequities.

Although many states increased SNAP and P-EBT benefits during the pandemic, inconsistent timing and implementation created challenges.

Shared Table can strengthen communities

Research has shown that good neighborhood bonds play a strong role in reducing the risk of food insecurity.

Little acts such as borrowing food from neighbors or borrowing a car to go shopping can help in big ways.

Meet Alliyah

Alliyah is a single mom, working two jobs to provide for her family. She tries to give her kids the most nutritious food she can, but sometimes can’t afford it.

Secondary user: Donors

Gabby is retired and spends most of her days outside in her garden. She always has extra produce in the summer and is looking for a way to share it.
